The cover was designed by Hipgnosis, and was the first one not to feature the band's name on the cover, or contain any photographs of the band anywhere. This was a trend that would continue on subsequent covers throughout the 1970s and beyond.

發行於1970年十月的《Atom Heart Mother》是平克佛洛伊德首張勇奪英國流行專輯榜冠軍的專輯，這是樂團首度與管弦樂團合作錄製的專輯，也是同時採用當時傳統的雙聲道立體聲與四聲道進行混音製作的專輯。由於樂團希望封面能反映此張專輯在風格上有別於之前的迷幻搖滾，帶出樂團樸實的風貌，藝術大師Storm Thorgerson就去牧場拍了乳牛照片當作專輯封面，此張專輯封面後來曾經出現在史丹利庫柏力克執導的電影【發條桔子】中。

專輯的標題組曲〈Atom Heart Mother〉在當年以唱片型式做發行的時候就佔滿唱片其中一整面的容量，這首由六段樂曲組合而成的標題曲，由樂團與當年跟Roger Waters一起為紀錄片【The Body】創作音樂的英國作曲家Ron Gessin所共同合作，這首超過23分鐘的標題曲以銅管樂與合唱團演唱作為主旋律，配搭平克佛洛伊德的實驗搖滾樂風。2011年重新發行版本由《The Wall》專輯製作人James Guthrie擔任全新數位化母帶重製技術製作，同時附有流行藝術大師Storm Thorgerson全新設計長達12頁的CD內頁本。
